Indian Plastics Institute (IPI) is a professional society registered in April 1985 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and subsequently under the Public Trusts Act, 1950. IPI was formally inaugurated on 6th May 1985 after taking over the affairs and assets and liabilities of the Plastics and Rubber Institute, London (PRI) – Indian Section (Plastics) as of 30th April 1985, which was established in June 1963 as an Overseas Section of Plastics Institute, London.

Indian Plastics Institute (IPI) is open to all types of organizations (including commercial, educational and governmental entities) and individuals. Any individual can fill up the Membership Application Form and become a Member IPI fraternity.

Individuals, Firms, Companies, Trusts, Foundations, Institutions or Bodies Corporate or Associate supporting or desirous of supporting or furthering the objects of the Institute, may, on payment of the lump sum donations as is fixed by the Institute from time to time become Donor Members of the Institute. Donor Members may nominate one representative to participate in the activities of the Institute and shall have all the rights and privileges of the Ordinary Members, except the rights to vote at General Meetings or to be elected to the Governing Council or to hold any office in the Chapters.

Individuals, Firms, Companies, Trusts, Foundations, Institutions, Bodies, Corporate or Associations supporting or desirous of supporting or furthering the objects of the Institute may, on payment of the annual subscription as may be prescribed by the Institute from time to time, be admitted as Patron members of the Institute. Patron members may nominate one representative to participate in the activities of the Institute. They shall have all the rights and privileges of the Ordinary Members except the right to vote at General Meetings or to be elected to the Governing Council or hold any office in the Chapters.

Individuals, possessing prescribed qualifications or recognition and interested in promoting the objects of the Institute and paying the lump sum amount as is fixed by the Institute from time to time, are eligible for admission as Life Members of the Institute. They shall have the right to attend General Meetings of the Institute and to speak and vote thereat and to be elected to the Governing Council or to hold any office in the Chapters.

Individuals possessing the prescribed qualifications, or recognition, may be admitted as Ordinary Members and shall, along with the applications for admission to Membership, pay the entrance fee and the annual subscription as prescribed by the Institute from time to time, and shall have the right to attend General Meetings, speak and vote thereat and to be elected to the Governing Council and to hold any Office in the Chapters, and participate in the administrative and other activities of the Institute. They may, by invitation, become Life Members by paying the prescribed lumpsum amount.

Individuals, not below the age of 18 years, and pursuing full-time study, or research, shall be eligible for admission, on payment of the entrance fee, if any, and the annual subscription, as student members and continue to be such till they attain the age of 25 years. On attainment of the age of 25 years, they will be required to get themselves transferred to ordinary membership or to any other category of Membership, as may be prescribed and applicable, on payment of the requisite subscription. Student members shall have the right to attend meetings, seminars, symposia, and participate in other activities of the Institute, but shall not have the right to vote at General Meetings or to be elected to the Governing Council or to hold any office in the Chapters. 

Individuals, possessing the prescribed recognitions or qualifications, may be admitted or elevated to appropriate grade of Professional Membership on payment of the prescribed subscription. Ordinary members may convert their Membership to Professional Membership by passing the prescribed examination or by seeking recognition. The grades of the Professional Membership shall be FIPI, MIPI, GIPI & DIPI or any other so designated by the Institute from time to time. The Professional Member shall be entitled to the use of appropriate designatory letters after his name as may be prescribed by the Institute from time to time. In case of transfer of Membership from one category or grade to another, the difference in the subscription shall be paid by the member who has become so transferred or upgraded.
Brief idea and criteria for getting Professional Membership recognition

• There are 3 stages to Professional Membership (MIPI)
• A recognized Degree at honours level.
• A period of approved training.
• A further period of responsible experience.

If you are

• At least 25 years of age (for graduates Polymer Science, or at least 30 year with graduation in other science and / or engineering subjects).
• A Member of the Institute for a period of 5 years
• Have adequate knowledge of the Science / Technology of Plastics, and working continuously for at least 6 years in the Plastics Field.

In exceptional cases, candidates who do not have the minimum academic qualification may be elected to MIPI if they are at least 40 year of age, and have at least 15 years of responsible experience in the Plastics Field.

For Fellow (FIPI) minimum requirements are

• At least 35 years of age
• Be Member of the Institute for at least 10 years
• Either have been MIPI for about 8 years holding an appointment of Senior standing in the Plastics Field, or have achieved a position of considerable scientific, managerial or technological distinction and outstanding contribution to the Plastics Industry.

Differential Subscription

These are in addition to the regular IPI Subscription.

Appropriate application forms have to be filled up and submitted, along with three references, followed by interviews.
